Sunderland Stadium (unbuilt)

Owen Luder Partnership

In 1972, Owen Luder, (a life long Arsenal supporter) was approached by Sunderland F.C to design a new ‘super stadium’.The Owen Luder partnership had established a presence in the North East having earlier completed Derwent Tower and Trinty Shopping Centre and car park in Gateshead. The concept for the Stadium was described as “amazingly ebullient” but “flashily drawn” proposal by Building Design magazine.

The design takes the form a series of huge concrete frame with a suspended roof formed by tensile cables. Sunderland where relegated to Division 2 the following season and the stadium was never built.
