New Police Headquarters Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough Architects and Engineering Department

Opened in 1962 the new headquarters brought the various fragmented departments of Middlesbrough’s Police department from across the town into a new building.

The building mass was split into two distinct, but connected buildings. The first a two storey amenity block with an undulating roof profile housing lecture rooms, games rooms, a canteen and the garage. The second and most prominent a six storey administration block housing the various policing divisions, inspectors, cells and even a firing range and gymnasium on the roof.

The upper floors where notable for the distinct pre-cast concrete frieze.

In 2013, the building was demolished to make way for a new hotel.
